Tyrone T. Cabalu M.D., 82, of North Caldwell, NJ, passed away peacefully with family at his side on April 12, 2022 in Morristown, NJ.
Tyrone was born in 1939 in Tarlac, Philippines. He attended Far Eastern University Medical School in Manila where he met Lilia Aquino and graduated in 1964. Tyrone and Lilia married and immigrated to the United States in 1965, arriving in New York City. He completed his internship at St. Clare's Hospital and his pediatric residency at the New York Infirmary, Bellevue Hospital, and Kings County Hospital. Tyrone moved to New Jersey with his family, settling in North Caldwell where they have lived and been parishioners of Notre Dame Church since 1975. He was an attending pediatrician at St. Michael's Hospital, West Hudson Hospital, and Clara Maass Medical Center, served as a physician on the Board of Education of Newark, and had private practice in Kearny and North Arlington until his retirement in 2017. He was active in various medical associations, serving as Chairperson of the Philippine Medical Association in America and Treasurer for the Far Eastern University Medical Alumni Society. Tyrone also served as President of the American Filipino Association in Bergen County as well as the New Jersey Bergen Phil-Am Lions Club. Tyrone loved music, particularly Beethoven, the Beatles, and Simon and Garfunkel; wine; and travel- always enjoying his frequent trips to his homeland, the Philippines. He would spend lazy afternoons fishing, crabbing, or watching golf, boxing, the Yankees, or the Knicks. Tyrone was an avid chess player with his opening move always being "Pawn to King 4". If offered, he would likely not turn down a game of cards, liar's poker, or a microphone to sing some karaoke. And probably most of all, he always found time for fun and laughter with his grandchildren. Tyrone is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Lilia of North Caldwell; his sons Tyrone Jr (Sherie) of Vienna, VA, Ray of Boston, MA, and Chris (Sandra) of Caldwell; his adored four grandchildren Eleanor, Kaitlyn, Luke, and Claire; sisters Maria Luisa "Gail" Cruz and Marcia Hunt; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews to whom he was Kuya or Tito Tyrone. He is preceded in death by his parents Hugo and Beatriz Tolosa Cabalu. The family would like to extend our thanks to the staff at Clara Maass Medical Center, Morristown Medical Center, Job Haines Home, and St. Joseph's Healthcare and Rehab for the wonderful help and care they have provided. The family will receive their friends on Monday, April 18, 2022 from 4-8 PM at Gaita Memorial Home, 154 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Little Falls. A funeral mass will be held at Notre Dame Church, 359 Central Avenue, North Caldwell, NJ, 07006 Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 10 AM. Please meet directly at the church. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington, NJ 07031. In lieu of flowers, and as a nod to Tyrone's generosity, please consider donations to Clara Maass Medical Center, One Clara Maass Drive, Belleville, NJ 07109 Attn: Celeste Oranchak, www.claragiving.org or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266. www.pancan.org Envelopes will also be provided by the funeral home during visiting hours.

Uncle Tyrone it hurts me to my soul and heart that I can't be there with the family to celebrate your life. Unfortunately circumstances is preventing me from coming up there to be with everybody. I still want to send my love and my thoughts and prayers to Uncle Tyrone and his family because you, were there for me and George and I really appreciate it more than you know. I remember everything that you've done for us The whole family

Thank you Sonny and Bonnie. Family was so important to him, I don't think there would have been any way he could not help. We completely understand that you cannot make the long trip here, but hope to see you again soon.

It was a true honor to know Dr.Cabalu. He compassionately cared for my family and I for many years previous to retirement. Our family started seeing him when he worked with Dr.Elkas. He made a positive impact on the world! He’s one of the great ones!

Thank you Michaelena. Our dad truly loved his work (and working with Dr Elkas) and providing care to the children and families of his patients. It is heartwarming to hear of the positive impact that he has had.
